1. Choose Your Medium
I can provide pet portraits in either acrylic paints, charcoal pencils or coloured pencils. I love using all three, although most of my work is in acrylics.
Acrylic paints create portraits with depth of colour and can depict intricate details. Painting in acrylics often takes longer than using pencils as the painting is developed in layers.
Charcoal pencil is also a firm favourite and is a perfect way to capture your pet’s character, whilst also eliciting artistic mood.
Coloured pencils provide a softer feel to a portrait and can convey unique details.
2. Choose Your Material and Size
I can paint with acrylics on:
- foam board
- quality artist’s paper
To paint on canvas, the sizes (in inches) can be any of the following (landscape or portrait orientation), or a custom size or shape:
- 6″ x 4″
- 12″ x 9″
- 14″ x 12″
- 16″ x 14″
- 20″ x 15″
- 24″ x 20″
- 36″ x 28″
Commissions carried on on board or artists paper are generally standard paper sizes (A5, A4, A3).
Each painting on a piece of slate is completely unique, as all the sizes and shapes vary. A lot of the slates I paint on are over 100 years old with interesting textures, colourations and lines through them, which provides a very organic, natural feel.
For drawings in charcoal and coloured pencil, I use quality artist’s paper in the following standard sizes, but I can also create a drawing to your specific size specifications (eg square, oval):

3. Provide Good Quality Photos
To be able to capture all of the details and characteristics of your animal, I require a number of good quality, detailed photographs from different angles, which I will use as references. It is also useful if you can let me know a little bit about the animal’s character, personality, likes and dislikes as I always try to capture each animal’s individual characteristics in my work.
If you are unsure, please contact me for some advice. If you are based in Dumfries and Galloway, I am very happy to meet with you and your pet and take some photos of your animal.
